「 Character 」
Name: Ky Kiske
Canon: Guilty Gear
Canon Point: Xrd -SIGN- Ch. 09, Maelstrom B (Right when Ky is ambushed and shot; while he's momentarily presumed dead.)
Age: 30

Background
  • Year 2167: Ky joins the Holy Order.
  • Year 2173: Ky dies in battle, causing humankind to lose the war against the monstrous Gears. A character rewrites the past by traveling back and saving him from death. He lives on to become commander of the Holy Order at 16 and lead mankind to victory.
  • Year 2175: The Crusades end. The Holy Order disbands and Ky joins the International Police Force to help keep the newfound peace.
  • Year 2180: Guilty Gear events occur. Ky participates in a tournament and witnesses the Gear commander's resurrection.
  • Year 2181: Guilty Gear X2 events occur. Ky investigates a conspiracy only to find his own superiors suspect. Despite leading the war against Gears, he spares a half-Gear named Dizzy upon hearing her non-violent desire to live. The two fall in love and elope in secret.
  • Year 2183: A government entity threatens Ky's family should he refuse them. He gives his ex-rival custody of his son for safekeeping and becomes a puppet-King as directed.
  • Year 2185: Guilty Gear 2 events occur. Certain Gears begin to disappear, including Dizzy. An army of Gears threatens to destroy mankind and Ky must protect his wife, sealed away to prevent her disappearance, and provide support to his allies while restrained by his involuntary kingship.
  • Year 2187: The Gear army is defeated. Ky uses his position to propose co-existence with Gears but is soundly defeated as other heads of state distrust his judgment.
  • Year 2187: Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- events occur. Within the same year, Ky and his allies capture another Gear threatening mankind. Together, they investigate the reason for these Gear attacks. After discovering the government entity (the same one that manipulated him) behind the attacks, Ky is caught off-guard during battle and shot multiple times by an ancient, forbidden weapon.

Personality
Ky is a man with no ulterior motives. He's honest and sincere about his fight for justice. He believes in happiness and peace for the defenseless who are struggling in life. He naturally takes on leadership positions in Guilty Gear because of his drive do good in the world. He's lawful-good almost to a T — earlier in the series, he even takes on an adversarial role against many characters due to his unwavering devotion to the law. Ky eventually learns why his blind devotion is harmful, but the ordeal never truly breaks his idealistic views and morals.

This doesn't mean he's completely incapable of adjusting his beliefs. An example is his mindset during and after the war. Before the war, Ky held strictly black and white views on justice. His beliefs were right and anyone against him was wrong. There was no in-between. After the war — after the events of Guilty Gear X2 that involved the discovery of corruption within his own police force and other governing bodies — he realized some "troublemakers" were actually trying to disrupt the truly wrongful entities.

Another example of him adjusting his views is when he met his wife, Dizzy, during Guilty Gear X2. She's a half-Gear. He spent over half of his life fighting against Gears to the point of being called a "killing machine" by another character. When he first met her, he was ready to fight and destroy her like the other Gears. After hearing her speak about her wishes to live a peaceful life, he realized it wasn't right to kill her. Not only did he spare her life, but he even provided protection and shelter. Getting to know and understand her opened him up to learning about the existence of other peaceful Gears like her.

These two examples don't show an extreme heel-turn away from his prior beliefs but show a willingness to adapt and refine his definition of justice. He can be really stubborn and resistant to change as a holdover from his youth, but he's relatively more flexible due to life experience and age.

The series frequently pushes the idea of Ky representing the hope of humankind. His personality reflects that through his constant battles against any threats to the world. Due to surviving and fighting during the war, he's become the type of person that throws himself into fights without fearing death. In fact, he willingly uses his life as a bargaining tool if it will protect the people important to him. Ky has no real middle ground when it comes to protecting the people he loves. It's all or nothing.

However, he does have some insecurity about his ability to properly protect his loved ones. His faith in himself was shaken after being blackmailed and manipulated into becoming a puppet-king. Sometimes it takes some comfort and support from others to help him regain his confidence.

The events of Guilty Gear also show he's very driven by his heart. His emotions drive everything he does — he's incredibly human, for better or for worse. His older peers often tell him to calm down or "grow up," but his honest emotions and charisma set him apart from other politicians. It earns him the affection of his friends, family, and many of his subjects.

Other personality quirks: He's religious and chivalrous in the old-fashioned sense. He believes in protecting women and children because he considers them more delicate, even if the woman can fight. He also compliments opponents without hesitation and extends them offers to use their strength for the good of the people. He always has hope that people will choose good over evil.

In summary:
Strengths
  • Determination allows him to follow his morals and beliefs without wavering.
  • Capable of being a little flexible about his beliefs.
  • Desire to protect drives him to train his body and hone his fighting skills.
  • Unafraid to die in battle.
  • Honest and polite to most people.
  • Empathetic to the feelings of others.

Weaknesses
  • Stubborn mindset can make it difficult for him to be very flexible about differing views.
  • Idealism and naivete open him to manipulation and blackmail.
  • Too honest; he literally doesn't know how to lie properly and is absolute junk at undercover work.
  • Holds back too much; can result in others mocking him or not taking his authority seriously.
  • Someone can easily manipulate him just by tugging on his heartstrings.
  • Can be insecure or disheartened by his weaknesses and inability to protect those important to him.
Powers
BATTLE TACTICS ♦ Ky possesses military and wartime experience relevant to his canon. (No gunpowder-based guns, but medieval and magic weapons.) He relies heavily on tactics and techniques to make up for what he lacks in pure physical strength.

SWORDPLAY ♦ Ky typically wields a long, two-handed sword as his weapon of choice.

HAND-TO-HAND ♦ He often integrates punches and kicks to mix up his attacks. It's best used to pressure opponents to give him some distance so he can then follow up with his sword or magic.

LIGHTNING MAGIC ♦ Ky can control lightning to give his sword with an electric charge, place lightning-charged glyphs, fire lightning projectiles, and surround himself with lightning to propel himself forward for a charge attack.

CRIMSON EYE ♦ Ky's left eye can turn crimson when activated, which enables a temporary and extreme boost in natural abilities such as healing or strength. He does not use this ability unless in extremely dire circumstances. Use is very limited. It causes pain afterward.

OTHER MAGIC ♦ Ky is capable of using magic for general, everyday use. Examples include using magic spells as phones or to cook.

Items
Ky will arrive with his default uniform, shot up multiple times, and an empty scabbard. (His sword will not arrive with him.)
