PERSONALITY
[ Honest, Earnest, Believes in Fairness and Justice, Sympathetic to Those Struggling ]
[ Leader, Religious, Represents Hope, Quick-Learner ]
[ Duty-Oriented, Takes Work Home, Sometimes Neglects Family for Work Responsibilities ]
[ Emotional, Stubborn, Has a Temper, Difficulty Lying or Deceiving, Still Expanding Worldview ]
[ Too Naive for His Occupation, Fairly Easy to Manipulate, Lacks Confidence at Times ]
Ky is a pious man who is earnest, empathetic, gifted, and passionate about fighting for peace and justice. During the war, this emerged as an unwavering belief that good was good and bad was bad. It was a black and white view that served him well during the war — where he only had to think in terms of 'ally' or 'enemy' — but threw him into conflicts when he struggled to adjust after it was over. His stubborn, rigid sense of justice earned him many enemies and conspirators who took advantage of his naïveté.
Meeting his wife, someone who should have been his enemy, changed him. The realization that people were trying to manipulate him changed him even further. Ky learned he had to make his own path in life to walk, and it has taken him to both happiness and sorrow. Life experience has killed a lot of that youthful zeal and confidence, but he now has a broader perspective of the world in its place. (Though it also comes with some insecurity in his own ability to protect his loved ones.) His earnest demeanor is further emphasized by his tendency to wear his heart on his sleeve. It's all too easy to tell when he's upset, happy, or angry, and it can leave him open to manipulation by more stealthier villains. He also has an inability to lie very well and makes for a terrible undercover agent.
Although his older peers in politics scold or regard him as immature for his emotional outbursts, the majority of his citizens love him for his honesty. Just like the word 'HOPE' he has engraved on his belt buckle, Ky has served as a symbol of hope for the people as well. He takes on the status with similar devotion and passion he had during the war. Unfortunately, it has been to the point that he has been somewhat of an absent father for his son. It's something he greatly regrets and hopes to make up for.
HISTORY
Ky was born in France during what would be the tail end of the Crusades, a 100-year war between humankind and the monstrous Gears. Presumably orphaned when he was a child, Ky was inspired to defend the helpless and bring an end to the war by joining the Sacred Order of Holy Knights. According to the timeline featured in the Guilty Gear Xrd games, he enlisted in the year 2167. Although the fine details about his service are scarce, he apparently earned a reputation as a prodigy swordsman with a talent for using the difficult-to-control lightning magic, his charismatic leadership, and his efficiency in killing the enemy (GGXrd R2). Despite his youth, he continued to excel within the ranks without a hitch until a man named Sol Badguy joined the Holy Order in 2172.
Sol was a man with a personality that clashed with almost every aspect of Ky's. Their arguments and duels reinforced a one-sided rivalry between them that always ended with Ky on the losing side of a fight. However, despite his immature outbursts, respect for him amongst his men did not waver. Ky continued to inspire hope within people, the effect of which was prominently seen when he died in 2173 during an attempt to retreat from a battle in Rome. His death shifted the tides of the war to the point that humankind would continue to fight a losing battle for the next 10 years. Historians would later write: "The hope of mankind crumbled on this day." (GGXX Side Red.)
The devastating event was eventually reversed by a time-traveling witch named I-No, who went back into time to ensure Ky's survival and alter the future for her own nefarious reasons.
In this repaired timeline, Ky survived the battle of Rome and Sol left the Holy Order shortly after in 2173. In the process of deserting the Order, he stole a sacred weapon — an action that earned Ky's ire and anger. Within the same year, then-Commander Kliff Undersn stepped down and appointed Ky as the new Commander. Ky, 16 years old at the time, accepted the promotion and received a sacred weapon, the Thunderseal, in honor of his new position. Under his command, he led the Order towards the Gear Commander, Justice, to seal her away with the help of Sol. The war officially ended in with her defeat in 2175.
The Holy Order disbanded at the conclusion of the war. Ky found his footing by joining the International Police Force and continuing to defend citizens while punishing the wrong. Unfortunately, in 2180, rumors of Justice's reemergence began to spread. This caused a panic amongst the world leaders who held a tournament to form a new Holy Order. Ky joined this tournament to figure out what was truly happening (Guilty Gear). At the end of it, Justice was completely destroyed by Sol, and Ky's own viewpoints were shaken up by her last words to him.
In 2181, he followed rumors about a new Commander Gear: Justice's daughter, Dizzy (Guilty Gear XX). After realizing her heart was kind and she meant no harm, he accepted her request to help her control her power and gave her shelter at his home. They eventually fell in love and had a child together. Since Gears were not recognized as citizens, they both kept their relationship a secret while addressing each other as husband and wife. At the same time, the Conclave — a behind-the-scenes group with great political and social influence — blackmailed him with knowledge of his wife's identity and arranged for him to be voted in as the High King of the United Kingdoms of Illyria. For the sake of his child's safety, Ky asked Sol to take his son in 2183.
Two years later, in 2185, Gears began disappearing due to a phenomenon called Sublimation. One of those Gears includes Ky's wife, and he managed to accidentally use a time-freezing seal on her to stop her disappearance. After holding off an enemy Gear army (Guilty Gear 2) from Illyria's capital in 2187, he worked together with another Gear to undo the seal. After his experience during the attack, he proposed Gear and human co-existence to the UN. His proposal was swiftly turned down.
During late 2187, he wrapped himself in another Gear attack and helped Sol prevent another revival of Justice. Later, he was faced with taking down the individual who tried to revive her — the Universal Will. Thanks to Sol and other individuals from Sol's past, they successfully thwarted the Universal Will's plans.
